How does one teach a child with ADHD to recognize and pause before the blowup? Always found this analogy useful: a neurotypical child’s emotions build like a plane taking off so it’s possible to intervene and pause, while an ADHD child’s big emotions are more like a helicopter. Straight liftoff (aka explosion, tantrum) with almost no “build.” Almost impossible to interrupt that escalation with any reflection or deep breaths.
I understand all you have written. However, what does one do when they cannot name the emotion they are feeling? Alexithemia, I believe it is caused and what I also have in addition to late diagnosed Au/dhd. What happens when you don’t have that half a second because it is being used for trying to name the emotion that you cannot name?
I keep wondering why the hell I even bother to ask the questions and pay the money when nobody seems to care to actually help? Keep writing one article after another with no real answers.
